LUNA ROSSA, THE UNFORGETTABLE CHALLENGE – THE BOOK

“Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team - La sfida indimenticabile” will be available in bookstores from November 30th.

Cagliari, November 29th 2021

Published by Rizzoli, the book will be presented to public and press on December 1st at the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milano.

2021 was a year of extraordinary success for Italian sports, starting with stories of Italians and their sleepless nights glued to their screens, enraptured by the endeavors of Luna Rossa in the waters of Auckland. Once again Luna Rossa, the sleek black boat whose black livery matched the carbon fibre with which she was built, battled against her New Zealand rivals, coming very close to the conquest of the America’s Cup after having triumphed in the Prada Cup.
Published by Rizzoli, the book is the story of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team’s 36th America's Cup presented by PRADA, seen through the photographic images of Carlo Borlenghi, a legend of nautical photography with over 30 years behind his camera lens to immortalize boats, regattas and men who have made the history of sailing. Almost 300 pages and over 200 photos - many of which unpublished - to relive the achievements at sea and portray the more "human" side of the team: not only an amazing flying boat and the images of the competitions, but the faces of people, the backgrounds of the bases in Auckland and Cagliari, the history of the Luna Rossa design and construction.

The book will be presented to the press and to the public (subject to availability) on Wednesday December 1st at 6 pm in the Spazio Polene of the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. In this area the AC72 Luna Rossa flying catamaran, finalist in the challenger selection regattas of the 34th America's Cup held in San Francisco in 2013, is suspended at 5 meters from the ground for public display.
Speakers on stage will be Max Sirena, Skipper and Team Director of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, photographer Carlo Borlenghi and authors Guido Meda and Stefano Vegliani, moderated by sports journalist and Sky Sport anchorman Giovanni Bruno.

From the book

"This Cup and this Luna Rossa have proved that not even extreme technology can undermine the magic that binds men to boats as if they were living beings. It has always been like that. It has always been the essence of sailing and the America’s Cup.",
from the text of Guido Meda

“"[...] Luna Rossa revived the enthusiasm toward it thanks not only to the flattering results, but, above all, to the commitment and genuine sportsmanship with which it ran the campaign. Luna Rossa defeated all the challengers and, in an exciting crescendo, won the Prada Cup. [...] We will come back even stronger, and with the same spirit that has always animated us. The goal remains unchanged: victory"
from the introduction of Patrizio Bertelli, President of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team

"To build Luna Rossa we traveled all over Italy and witnessed a state-of-the-art country; in mechatronics, in the processing of composite materials, in the university departments that vie with international colleges. We managed to make a boat that was almost completely Italian and that is why an entire country flew on its wings, which turned out to be much better than it is used to telling itself." ,
from the text of Max Sirena, Skipper e Team Director - Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli
